Using Rhassoul Mud As a Natural Acne Remedy

Rhassoul mud is well known throughout the world for its ability to keep skin looking beautiful and is used in upscale health spas worldwide. It’s a reddish clay that comes from deposits under the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

Mud masks have been used for centuries to help give skin a smooth, clean and fresh appearance but Rhassoul clay is unique in that it has higher concentrations of trace elements like magnesium, iron, sodium, silica, potassium and calcium. The reason for this is due to the depths at which it is mined. These elements help detoxify the skin, hence its ability to prevent skin problems. Also, as we age our bodies do not produce minerals to the extent it did when we were younger, so we need other sources. This depletion of minerals results in dry skin, wrinkles, brittle bones and nails, and dry, lackluster hair. Using Rhassoul mud helps replenish these depleted minerals.

The drying action of a Rhassoul mud mask helps draw out impurities and toxins in the skin. It can also be used as a cleanser since it helps get rid of excess dirt, sebum, oil and skin cells while at the same time having a moisturizing and soothing effect on the skin. It helps reduce dryness and flakiness while improving texture, elasticity and clarity. It is also antimicrobial which makes it a perfect supplement for someone prone to acne.

There are numerous other types of mud that can be very effective in helping one’s skin, such as Moor Mud, Dead Sea Mud and French Green Clay, but the best by far is Rhassoul Mud. Even if a person has sensitive skin, this mud can be used since it’s very mild.

A basic recipe includes 2 oz. of clay with 2 oz. of powdered herbs, such as lavender, ground chamomile, marshmallow root or ginger root (good for dry skin). Neem leaves can also be used and is antibacterial, so it will further help with any acne problem.

Essential oils can be added to the herbs for fragrance, however no more than 2 drops of the oils should be added since they are very concentrated.

Add enough water to make a paste, but do NOT use a metal bowl, use glass, wood or pottery. You can start with equal amounts of water and the clay mixture and let it set for a few minutes. Add more water if necessary. Apply a thin layer on your face and let dry. It can take anywhere from 10-20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. You will immediately notice how smooth and fresh your face will feel!

An extra bonus with Rhassoul clay is that it is also a great way to clean hair and alleviate scalp problems. An easy recipe for shampoo is:

One tsp. Rhassoul clay

One-half tsp. oil (like tea tree or neem, but any oil is fine)

Water

Let the mixture set for around 10 minutes and then just rub it on your scalp, don’t worry about massaging it into your hair, just apply it to your scalp. Then simply rinse. You’ll find you won’t have to wash your hair as frequently. And besides that, you’ll be helping the environment by not having to buy and dispose of all those plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles!

The bottom line is Rhassoul clay is a perfect addition in any household, whether a family member has skin problems or not. This is just one of many acne natural remedies and if you’re prone to acne this may be the perfect solution for you!
